I am trying to format my 80Gb Maxtor HD FAT 32 with format.com and I get: "Fatal error writing setting disk access flags...format terminated" Error code: 05 Any one have any ideas what this error means or how I can fix it? I was thinking low level format but I've never done that before....

You do not advise which version of dos you are using.
It could be that you are simply using a version of format.com that cannot handle such a large hdd.
Suggest go to the hdd makers website and you should be able to download a program that formats the hdd and if required can do a llf, but I think that should not be necessary at this stage.
Good luck - Keep us posted.
