Good Day,

I have recently noticed that my desk top makes a loud noise when it stays on for over an hour, I am not sure if is the power supply fan or the fan for the processor. It makes a sound like it has been working for a very long time in a hot environment and to honest it is very cool where I am. It has not affected the pc greatly, but I would like to diagnose the problem now before it causes severe damage to the pc . can you help me please. I have 550 watts power supply.

Just because the outside air is cool doesn't mean the inside is. Download SpeedFan and post the temperatures it detects.

Open the case and identify which fan is making the noise.
Clean out the built up dust and crud from the fan blades and heatsink fins. Use a small brush to dislodge the buildup and an airduster to blow the dust out. Avoid vacuuming as this risks static shock. If the fan bearings are worn then the fan will be out of balance and the noise gets worse. In the past I have sucessfully lubricated noisy fans by carefully lifting the adhesive label over the spindle and adding a single drop of light machine oil. This is only a temporary fix and eventually the fan will need replacing.

It sounds like your PC is getting really hot cause thats what normally happens when the PC get too hot (fans automatically increase speed for more cooling). It's possible that there is a lot of dust clogged up in the PC/Fans.

You should buy a Compressed air can to get rid of the dust.

Use Coretemp to record your temperatures and post them here so we can see.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your quick response, but sad to say the power supply committed suicide the very next day. Had to replace it. Thanks
