Failure to detect USB modem

My PC often fails to detect my Alcatel USB Speedtouch modem unless I make a connection immediately after booting up. If I open other programmes first, I frequently get a message telling me that the PC cannot detect the modem. I have downloaded updated drivers from the ALcatel site, but the 'Add New Hardware' wizard will not let me load them - it only gives me the option of loading drivers from a CD. Any ideas?

start menu - settings - control panel - system. go to the device manager tab there. click on the + next to Network Adapters. your modem should be listed there. if not, try under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. when you've found your modem, click it once, then click the Properties button below the list. click the Driver tab. then click the Update Driver button near the bottom and follow the instructions there. have fun
