I have a laptop which has the internal DVD-ROM integrated into the docking station. A few years ago the DVD-ROM stopped working, so an external USB CD-ROM drive was purchased. This drive works fine. If I purchase Windows XP Pro Upgrade, and insert it into the External CD-ROM drive, will the installation succeed if it is being done by an external device?

When Windows needs to reboot it could have a problem finding the install disk. I don't really know. You could copy the XP files to your harddrive and run the install from there.

Are you able to boot from the external drive? Do you have a bootable CD to test before you buy the XP upgrade? Did the laptop come with bootable recovery disk or it's own operating system disk?
