What is the difference between external hard drive types? How do I know which one to buy?

Jaz drives are bigger than zip drives. Not many people use them anymore as external hard drives are way cheaper and larger.
Zip drives were popular in the mid 90s, their 100MB capacity was ideal for backups back then. The 250MB version never really took off as this was introduced about the same time as the Jaz drive with it's (from memory) 2GB capacity. External HDD are identical to the ones inside a PC, therefore can be as large as you want.
The question is USB2 or firewire? I'm not going there!

Why buy either?? For the same price, probably cheaper, you can buy a flash thumb drive that will give you 1GIG storage, is USB2 fast, and fits on your keychain. It will do everything the ZIP/Jazz will do and 500% faster.

Rob To add to ranchhand's reply, the best reason to go with a USB drive is that you are more likely to be able to use it on another computer. How many folks do you know that have ZIP/Jazz drives? How many have USB ports on their computers? If you need even more capacity, consider External harddrives.
