I would like to try linux, but i can only have one harddrive inside of my pc, and i don't want to delete my windows and don't know how to dual-boot. but can i install linux to my external harddrive and boot from it or something please help. This is a serious question?

Why not install the hard disk internally. Install Linux on it. During the installation process you will be asked if you want to Install Grub or Lilo. Answer Yes and it will install dual boot for you. Dead simple.
You dont need to know anything except how to read.

It depends on which disro you use. Most include Lilo, some include Grub, Some include both. Either one will do but Lilo seems to be the most common. They both do the same job.
