external HDD not detected on my PC Wife PC OK

Specs: Windows XP
I have just upgraded our (wife and me) HP Pavillion dv6000 laptops (both the same) to larger hard drives. All running okay. Decided to use the old ones as portable external HDD's so put them caddies. Wifes works perfectly hooked up to her laptop. My external works perfectly hooked up to her laptop. Neither will work at all hooked up to mine.

I have done the forum searches and cannot locate a similar problem/solution:

Plug/play recognizes it is there but only recognizes the ATA/ATAPI bridge. If I open up control panel, Device Manager it is listed under Other Device. It doesn't appear in a USB connection. If I look inDisk Management my sparkly new internal drive is listed, but not the old, external one.

Oh, and I have hooked up my Nikon digital camera using the same cable and USB port and it is detected it perfectly.

I would love to find a solution to this! Can anyone help me out, please??

Are the system's auto detect feature exactly the same in the bios as your wife's computer. What happens when you open or check properties of the Other Device in the device manager?
Are the drive caddies self powered using an external power source, like your camera would be using its batteries? If they are not perhaps your usb ports are not providing enough power for the drive.
