Solved External HDD not detected and I need to backu

Specs: Windows 7 64-bit, 4GB
I have an Asus N61jq-b2 running windows 7 64-bit and I believe I have a corrupted registry because although I can boot and run applications whenever I attempt to use external media such as a pen drive or CD my computer will be unable to assign it a path (E:,etc.).

I have tried about every fix for this on the internet and I have decided to restore my OS. However as external media does not work I have 100gb+ of applications and documents which I was too lazy to back up. Now I am left with the task of trying to save this data.

I have a 1tb WD external HDD and need to move files from my 2.5" laptop hard drive to my external hard drive without booting into windows. I do have other computers which I could use if necessary to help me back up my data. I would prefer not to back up online (I have slow internet) but if that is the only way to back up say so.

I would remove the drive from the laptop. With an adapter, I'd attach both drives to a host PC and copy the drive. A 'garage sale' PC should be enough to do this (anything with two working USB v2 ports).
This one works for me:

There may be a bootable CD that will do the same using the laptop. Drivers are usually the problem with the boot CD solution, among other issues.

When I first got my computer I mad a disk image. If I use that to restore my computer will only the C: partition be affected.

A disk image is the entire physical device; all partitions if it is a true image. It is possible that only the logical disk was imaged.
The only way I would know for sure is to restore the image to a spare drive. It may not boot, but it can be removed from the machine and inspected.
As long as you have good backups, nothing wrong with a little experimentation.
