does an external hdd for a laptop work in a desktop also .. ie im looking for an external hdd for my desktop maybe 60-80 gig and see the 3.5 form factor but i also see the laptop ones that are smaller and more mobile with the same gig ..

Any USB 2.0 enclosure will work with both desktop & laptop regardless of HD size.

And most laptop HDDs rigged as externals don't need an outside power supply... they get their power from the usb.... nice advantage!

I use a 2.5" USB external HDD instead of a flash drive.
It is way faster than a flash drive and holds 120GB. And, as blackbill points out, it doesn't require its own power supply so I can just put it in my shirt pocket,
