I have a Maxtor 40gb hd that I want to give to my daughter to take to college. I have it in an enclosure and have partitioned the drive. It goes through all the steps to format but then I get an error message "windows unable to complete format" Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

With all the hard drives i've formatted, it's easiest to install it on the computer you're going to use to format and find the drive in my computer, then right click and format. If you've tried this and it has failed, this link will let you download a formatting tool that will erase everything, including partitions from the hard drive. http://www.download.com/Active-Kill-Disk-Hard-Drive-Eraser/3000-2092_4-10188745.html?tag=lst-0-1
