Hello,
I'm having a problem getting my external HD enclosure (USB 2.0) working with my Compaq Presario V2000. The problem which occurs has two aspects.
1) If HD is connected to usb port and powered up the computer will not post... as soon as it is disconnected it will continue with booting process.
2) in XP, if the HD is connected it is not detected properly and is listed under USB controllers as "unknown device"My USB ports are working, tested with my mouse and usb memory key.
This HD works fine on my Compaq N600c laptop running win2000 pro.

The mboard bios on the Presario must be capable of recognizing the size of the hard drive in the enclosure. XP SP2 recognizes a drive larger than 128gb (in Windows; 137gb manufacturer's size) no problem, but the mboard chipset must also be able to do that. If the mboard bios doesn't recognize the size of the drive you can have delays while booting, sometimes forever.
If the mboard chipset can't recognize the hard drive size, then Windows XP SP2 can't see the drive either.
If the hard drive in the enclosure is not yet partitioned and formatted, it will not show up in My Computer or Windows Explorer. It will show up In Disk Management, however, if it is recognized.
Many USB connected things will not work properly unless they are connected directly to a USB port and its controller - they will not work properly if connected to a USB hub.
Look in your bios Setup to see if there are settings you need to enable for a USB connected hard drive, or a removable drive.
You might also have to turn on USB legacy support. You might need to load a driver in order for the external USB interface in the enclosure to be recognized in Windows - see the web site of the enclosure manufacturer.
