External HD making ticking noise

Hi
I'm having problem with my external HD making ticking noise. It was working yesterday and when I got home today, I heard ticking noise and it was driving me crazy and just now, I realized that it was my external drive that was making the noise. I tried plugging the HD via USB and it didn't find anything. How do I go about saving this problem? I have many important stuff stored in that HD.

Save the data immediately. Ticking noise from a hard drive means it's dying.

i concur, i've seen that before, but it was too late to recover any data from friends hard drive

Yep, its pretty much dead. Backup all files, and unplug that ticking time bomb.

I have had a noisy hd for over 2 yrs now and its still going ,but back up just the same !!!

There's a difference between a noisy hard drive and a hard drive that starts making noise.
