I dropped my 250 gb wd external hd It started to make clicking sounds and would not load the drivers when i plugged it in. I took of the cover and noticed that the arm that I think reads the data was messed up. Is it possible to recover the data from thid hd? Thanks for your reply.

I have some really bad news for you - it probably would have been possible to recover data until you took the cover off. Once you took the cover off you reduced the chances of data recovery to almost nil.

Hard disk case are hermetically sealed in a clean room - a room so clean not a single speck of dust is anywhere in sight. Those heads skim across the surface of the disk at a distance of about 3-5 microns. Thats about half the thickness of a human hair and a thin one at that. A speck of dust would be like hitting a rock in a car at 40 mph. A speck of tobacco smoke would be like hitting a huge boulder.

You could send the disk to a data recovery company but be prepared to fork out a lot of money.
