external Harddrive on Laptop !

Hello; I am trying to hook up an 200 Gb external hdd to a acer notebook. The notebook does not show the drive as an icon, so I cannot adress it.
What could be the problem??

my "Word 2000" broke down and now just displays on the whole screen, but format ing features and symbols are missing, how can reset the default setting.

The drive must be partitioned/format before you can use it. Disk Management will do that for you.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

disk management is found in control panel/performance an maintenance/admin tools/computer management...on the left side click on storage then disk management. it also may be partitioned but needs a drive letter assigned to it. play around with disk management and see if it comes up.
back up your back up...i just lost 300 gigs of "back up" and i don't have the originals for a lot of it.
