External Hard Drives Not Working

Specs: Windows XP
I have 3 external hard drives. A couple of months ago, they were working fine, but recently they dont work.

When I start them, they make the "beeping" noise that tells me they are recognized. However, when I go to My Computer, there is no drive and it freezes. However, the externals work perfectly fine in Safe Mode.

I've tried Tweak UI, but it didn't help. I've tried changing the drive letter, but that didn't work. Would getting new USB ports help? A week ago, I went to safe mode and unistalled the driver for one of them and reinstalled in in normal mode. It worked fine, but when I restarted my computer, it went back to not working.

Any suggestions?

They work on my other desktop. Here is what I tried just now:

I have another laptop harddrive sitting around my room, so I decided to install windows on that and start from scratch, installing my old programs and transferring my old personal documents via flash drive. I've done this before, so it's easy to me.

I just reinstalled windows, so I decided to plug the externals in... and THEY WORK. Hopefully they will continue to work when I update xp to SP3. Will keep you posted.
