I've been having trouble with my Iomega Zip Drive- has annoying click and some Zips wont load and freeze my computer. Been looking into this topic on the net and it looks like its common with Zip Drives, its been called the Click of Death.
I read a suggestion on a messageboard to try on external hard drive (what a good idea!)
Does anybody have any recomendations? I saw a maxtor 40 gig for $109 at Comp USA but it has 5400 rpm and seek at 12ms. Not sure if this is a good rpm because I've seen other drives at 7200 rpm. What about 12ms is that slow, quick or about the same speed as the zip? What about the Maxtor brand-anygood? Any opinions appreciated.

I own a Maxtor 120gig external hard drive that connects through USB. I got it for $150. I've been quite happy with it. You really don't notice the speed thing, so unless you're really picky about that kind of thing I don't think it'll matter. I don't really see much of a difference between my external drive and my 7200rpm internal drive.

Go to grc.com and read about the "click of death". Some of the disks may be replaceable under waranty.
