external hard drive wants to format?

Specs: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, 2 GHz / 1978 MB
ive had a 1 TB WD external hard drive for about 6 months now which i save everything to and it had always worked fine, but recently my computer shut down and restarted and wen it came back on everything seemed fine and but went too access a particular folder
(the 1 that used up the majority of my external hard drive's memory)
but it says the folder is empty wen i hold the pointer over the folder.
wen i double click too open the folder it says " you need to format disk G; before you can use it" i don't want too format it because it says i will lose everything and the weird part is that all the other folders i have on my external hard drive work fine.
My hard drive still has the same amount of use and free space and i used a file recovery program demo on it "magic recovery Pro" and it shows that my files are still there but i cant afford to pay for the full version of the program. so is there any way for me to do it myself?

Look in Disk Management at that drive listing. If listed as RAW you may be able to repair the partition by using a utility called testdisk. Get testdisk at the link below. Be sure to read all the tutorials prior to using.

You should always maintain at least TWO copies of any data you want to keep.
