External Hard Drive Undetected, I don't want to format it!

Specs: Windows Vista, 1 gb
Hi guys,

I need some help.
I bought an external hard disk drive two years ago. It contains all my files (photos for my portfolio, student thesis, articles, researches). Since last night, it is not detectable from any of the computers I use at home and at work.

I tried TestDisk and Recuva and Disk Manager of this computer. My laptop slows down whenever I try to insert the EHDD. There was one time that my EHDD appeared on the Disk Manager. But that was all. At TestDisk, it stops after I press enter after choosing NO LOG. Recuva cannot run when I try to insert it.

I need my files as soon as possible for work.

Please help me.

I am "stupid" on this area, but here goes: is the drive in a case? If so, try removing the drive from the case and installing it into a 'healthy' computer as a secondary drive. There may be issues with the external interface & cabling. Check jumper settings on both host computer main drive and your secondary drive, so that your main drive is "master w/slave" and secondary is "slave". Best bet, considering my (lack of) knowledge: take it in to a reputable shop and I'm about sure they'll be able to recover your files if the disk isn't junked.
