External Hard Drive problem.

Specs: Windows 7
I have Windows 7, the hard drive is 500 GB Western Digital.

Yes, really, 10KB/S. It used to transfer at some MP/S, now it's literally a crawl. What could cause this?

I tried transferring my files, and nothing works, it's just way too slow. It is through USB 2.0, I tried switching wires to no avail. I also tried rebooting the HDD and taking it out of it's case. Same problem.

I have EXTREMELY important files on this, and formatting is NOT an option. Is there anything I can do at all?

Also, trying to open the files as well as browsing the HDD is EXTREMELY slow as well.

I have no viruses on my PC, and my PC runs fine.

Are these small files with a deep directory structure? Then this is normal behavior.
