external hard drive not recognised

August 16, 2012 at 11:23:44
Specs: Windows 7
I use a 2TB WD external hard drive for watching movies thru a media centre. I have already half filled it after about 6 months or so. However all of a sudden my laptop or desktop wont access it. It comes up with a message saying i need to format the disk. I can however still watch films from it! Help. many thanks.

Either the enclosure is bad or the drive is bad. Get either or both new.

Can run disk diag's on it but you will have to separate box from disk.

Google is evil

Not sure how you can watch films on a disk you can't access.

EDIT:
Please ignore the above. My bad, I'd missed where it said
"media center" was being used.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Re #3. Apologies, I missed that bit - have editted my #2.

About the only thing I can suggest is that you run chkdsk on it (if it will let you),
to see if that shows any problems that can be fixed.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
