External Hard Drive Making Noise

Specs: Windows 7
Hitachi Lifestudio Mobile makes clicking sound when connected to pc through usb port. already tried connecting to other pc's port, same noise and cannot access files. external hard drive corrupt?

clicking is not generally a good sign,,,,it is often the read/write head constantly resetting. I would try to get the data with "pc files inspector" or recuva, if you can. It is often not possible to recover data if the drive is physically failed, but it is worth a shot. If you are able to retrieve the data, you can then use something like seatools to test the external drive. Recovery of this type is quite expensive. These recovery tools are free and work well. In the case of a physical failure....paying for a software recovery program is not likely to work any better.
