Comment:

I have a Seagate 160 gig external hard drive using BounceBack Pro backup software. This external hard drive system was working fine untill I had to reinstall the software and drive. Now, I cannot disengage the drive using the safely remove hardware icon in the system tray as it indicates the drive is currently being used, try again later. Seagate indicates that explorer may be using it but I don't see how. In addition when I boot the computer it takes an extremely long time to boot. When I go to a system restore point prior to installing the BounceBack software everything returns to normal. Any idea what this could be or strategies for adressing? Thanks for your help and Happy Easter. Fred

Try uninstalling the software, unplugging/disconnecting the unit and then uninstalling the drivers. (You may have to uninstall drivers in Device Manager before disconnecting.)

Then reboot and insert the USB cable into a new USB port this time. Wait for Windows to detect it, and then install the drivers from the CD. (Try without software first.) Then reboot with it plugged in and see if it made a difference.

You will not damage the drive nor the computer by simply unplugging the usb device. Seems one reference to this is at www.usbman.com

@mga

Yes, of course: good point! But just make sure you're not currently writing anything to it, that could corrupt bits of data.
