External Drive Inaccessible

Specs: Windows 7 , Athlon 1600 Mhz/3 GB
I am trying to help a friend. Her computer died and she would like to save some info from the hard drive. I pulled the hard drive and installed it into an external enclosure and connected it to my Windows 7 laptop with a usb cord.

It shows up in the bios, it also shows up in device manager as working properly. I can't see it in windows explorer. In disk management it shows up as Disk 1 (with a downward circled red arrow) as unknown, not initialized. I don't want to initialize it because I don't want to lose the info on the drive. I'd appreciate any ideas to read and save info from this drive. thanks -

I had read about recuva in the archives, I had already downloaded it and installed it on my laptop. When I try to recover it only shows C and D drives which are in the laptop. I plugged a flash drive into the other usb port. I ran recuva again and it showed C, D and F (the flash drive). I think this means it sees something on the external drive or the flash drive would have come up as E. I don't know how to go any further.
