I have a Dell Latitide C600 running both Windows XP and Ubuntu Dapper. Recently I noticed that te battery doesn't last too long. Are there any services I can switch off especially in Windows in order to extend the battery life, pending a replacement of said battery?

Nothing that will make any difference. Varying the amount of software running is going to have a minimal if any effect on power consumption.
