First let me say that this is a double post for all intents and purposes.
I posted this on the XP board, but I have NEVER had any luck getting any replies there in four years. So I'll try it here. This is a strange one.
I'm guessing it has something to do with SP2, but can't swear to it.
First two problems were that the Device Manager doesn't show video adapters.
Found while searching the internet that that isn't that unusual, and can be a problem with SP2 (which they're not making any great effort to make public yet)
Second problem was the fact that this CPU was forever running at 100%.
After reinstalling video drivers, running all adware and virus programs umpteen times, I finally seem to have solved the CPU problem by uninstalling Java.
However, when I reinstalled the video driver, something went whacky.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled, and rolled back, and this happens no matter what the driver.
This system has dual monitors, so dual video cards..
The primary (AGP) used to be a nVidia, and is not a 3D Prophet.
The secondary is and always has been a Velocity 128.
This is where it gets strange.
When I boot this machine, the second monitor initializes just fine.
Within a few seconds though, it changes to a black background with white icons. In other words, no color.
Everything works on it, icons function, windows move between the monitors, but no color.
This is on the monitor that has had no changes to the driver at all.
The other one that has been changed, the Hercules, has been changed, changed back, updated, rolled back and still the same thing.
Anyone have any idea what is going on?And before anyone asks, I've been trying since before I posted this thread the first time, to pull up my system info.
Still waiting........
Report Offensive Follow Up For Removal

I have come across nearly the same problem. Windows XP SP2, GF4 Ti4200 primary and a STB velocity 128 secondary. I just recently added the card to allow a dual monitor setup and it goes black and white after a minute of booting.
I noticed one interesting detail in that I moved a firefox window to the monitor and the icon in the upper left retained it's color unless moused over. It also regained it's color when i gave another window focus and took it away. My best idea right now is to try different drivers I'll reply again if I get something that works.

I seem to have found a driver that works. Haven't rebooted yet to test fully.
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=17580
Grab it there and use the nvms.inf as the driver. After that I just disabled and re-enabled it as my secondary display in display properties and it seems to be doing the trick. If I don't reply again within a day or two you can assume it also worked after reboot.

Okay final post relating to this. On reboot it acts like it previously did. Unchecking extend desktop to this monitor and applying then re-enabling it fixes for the current session though. I don't think that works with the default XP driver but if you like you can try it again before installing the new one. A better more permanent fix would be nice but I'm more likely to change cards before I find that.
