explain to me RAID please

ok i really dont understand the point of RAID and i dont understand y someone would want to use it for home use, all i understood is it is like a back up of ur original HDD, bue instead y dont u just use it for more HDD space i just dont get it, also once u tell me the benifits and dis advantages can u tell me how to set it up, and is it possible with IDE, im so lost with raid i dont get it.

bahh seems pointless to me, in the past it was good and for servers now its still good (only with sata HDDs that is or else its pointless) but like for hom u can just buy a huge HDD and not bother with raid at all xD, so ya ok so i have come to the conclusion not to use RAID cause its pointless :P
