A few months ago I bought a used Satellite Pro 4600 with 2 x 256MB memory modules installed. One was PC133 and the other was Toshiba original PC100. I started and shut down the laptop a few times without a problem and then installed Everest Home Edition to check the specs. About an hour later I tried to start it again and I got the message „Please remove the incompatible memory in slot B“. I removed the PC100 from slot B and it started fine. Tried it in slot A and got the same message different slot. Tried it in another laptop with the same results. I figured it was just bad luck that the memory died right after I bought it. I put in a Kingston PC133 module that according to Kingston and Toshiba is incompatible with my model but it runs fine. Just last week I bought another used laptop, a Tecra 8200 with 128MB PC100 Toshiba orginal memory installed and just like the last time it ran fine until I installed Everest Home Edition. The next time I tried to start it the memory was fried. It now runs perfect with 2 x 256MB Kingston incompatible memory modules! Is it somehow possible that Everest stressed my memory and fried it or did I just have bad luck? Why is the incompatible memory working in both machines? I’m not complaining, PC100 costs twice as much as PC133 so I was able to upgrade cheaper. I just hope I’m not running a risk of damaging something with the wrong memory. Thanks for any help

In my experience, memory doesn't "just die"...either it works, or it doesn't. And just because it doesn't work in one machine, it doesn't necessarily mean it's defective. You may simply have a density issue. Most PC100 RAM is low density, most PC133 is high density. High density RAM usually won't work in a rig built for low density. Was one stick single sided & the other double sided? When you had both 256MB sticks installed, were 512MB being recognized? or was it just 256MB? or possibly 384MB? Since it's brand new RAM, take it back! If you have to, contact the manufacturer for an RMA number...most RAM has a lifetime warranty.

Everest has nothing to do with your "problem"

"Please remove the incompatible memory in slot B".

Wasn't that telling you that you need to install compatible memory modules in both slots?

Type and speed?

Documentation and user manuals are written by engineers, and are available online from Toshiba if you don't have one.

I did an install in a Tecra for a customer, and checked with Crucial to make absolutely sure the memory was compatible.

No, it's not Everest that fried your memory.

I tried the memory in 3 different machines that are supposed to run PC100 and it doesn't work in any of them. If I install it alone it doesn't boot and if I install it with a 2nd module I get the remove incompatible memory message. They were both double sided and 512 was recognized. The RAM isn't new, it came installed in a used laptop I bought. I don't really think Everest had anything to do with it but it was the only change I made to both laptops before the problem started.

According to the user manual the memory in Slot B was compatible. It's PA3069U-1M25. Again, it worked fine the first few times I started the machine and 512MB was recognized. I got the incompatible message only after I installed Everest.
