Hi all

I have recently changed to a mobo with built in LAN : )

Never used it before, I have been using my Cable Modem at 600k through my USB 2.0, when i recieved my cable modem it came with the USB 2.0 cable and the Etherent ( LAN ) cable, just plugged the ethernet cable in and seems a little faster on the net, what really is the difference, and what is faster the USB 2.0 port or the Etherent ( LAN ) port

Thanks in advance all

Actually, your cable modem speed will be governed by the ISP's cap, and ,especially down in the area of 600kps, it matters not whether you have a usb or ethernet connection.

I understand what you mean, I just read on an internet site that Ethernet uses hardware only for networking and cable modems, but with USB it has to use software and rely on system rsources which can slow the PC down and the speed of which internet pages are displayed, since I put the modem on Ethernet I found that my PC booted faster and internet pages are coming up qicker

Just wanted peoples opinions on which is more reliable, and which is better to use

Thanks for repling so quick

my speculation (no experience here) is that the throughputs are too close to make a difference.

Given the prevalence of usb driver issues and the stability of lan drivers, I have always used the lan port.

I'm not sure what software the article was referring to. You do need a device driver for the modem when using usb, but you also need a device driver for the lan card when using ethernet. Unless I'm mistaken the only software involved are these device drivers. (?)
