Comment:
I cannot hook up my USB to the computer and the ethernet cable to my video game system without only the computer working or the video game system to work. What is wrong? I have a Westell Model 6100 from Verizon.

I'm assuming (pardon me if im wrong) that the Westell Model 6100 is a modem. You can't use a modem as a router. A modem can only send out ONE signal. The reason that there are two hook-ups is because some people won't have ethernet, some won't have usb, but most people are bound to have one of them. If you want to do what you described, get a router.
