Some of the toshiba's set the ide mode in the bios to use a master slave configuration. Opposed to the cable select mode that most manufactures use. You can not change this behavior in the BIOS it's hard coded. The only thing you can do is use a small wire to try to jump the contacts in the optical drive socket. I have tried this on many dives and only a handful actually worked. It was a extremely frustrating project. This being said, it is just better to replace the optical drive with the correct one for that model toshiba.
