OS: None yet
CPU/Ram: Pent III, 300 / 320 Meg R
Product: Panasonic Toughbook/CF-27
Comment:

"Save to Disk file not found
Save to Disk feature is disabled"
This is the message I get when booting up my toughbook. I recently wiped the hard drive DOD style and began loading Win XP only to make the connection that the little guy only had 64 Megs of RAM. I have maxed the capacity out to 320MB but when I tried again to load Win XP I got the message you see above and have everytime since and have yet to successfully load XP. What is going on with that? Also, I 'm thinking of running the scruber again and go with Linux Slackware. Any thoughts?

How did you wipe the drive? DOD? Not familiar with Panasonic laptops but I assume there was originally a restore partition at the front of the drive. Did you delete that? Does all your memory show up in the POST screens?
What is the history of this laptop?

Windows XP on 300 mhz, even with 320 ram sounds like a bad combination. You probably want to make sure the HD is completely wiped before you load XP on that pc.

One thing about wiping HD's is to delete all of the partition tables. One thing I personally like to do is boot from a 98 CD and run the old DOS fdisk, delete all the partitions, then "fdisk /mbr." Then I create a DOS part, and format it from the 98 CD, doing a "format C:/u" where /u = unconditional. Then once I do that I pop the XP CD in and install, but "format with NTFS (Quick)" method.

I'm not sure if that will help you, but if your "Save to Disk" error is your leftover restore partition's MBR screaming at you, it might.

Another issue might be the memory you put in it. What kind is it, is it the RIGHT kind? Are the chips good? (I've found that windows installations act crazy when the chips are whacked.)

I ran the scruber again, again DOD style (being a 7 times over deletion), and now I am getting a new message. "Partition table corrupt or missing, Save to disk feature disabled." So I'm thinking all I need to do is format and partition the HD and wait for my Linux disk to arrive. Aside: The history of this machine is short, really. I got it from a friend. It came with no power cord and a battery that would serve better as a boat anchor (and that's not saying much). To be completely honest, I do not know if the memory chip I got was the right kind. I was TOLD it was compatable. The machine has 64 MB of built-in RAM so there was no previous chip to get numbers off of. I wrote to Panasonic's tech mail and all I got was VERY basic info on my machine. They would not inlcude the type of RAM. Can anyone tell me if they know the correct type? Also, the chip is new so I don't think that's the problem. P.S. Please don't scoff at my wanting to try Linux. I've heard nothing but good things about it and it's only real drawback is it's lack of compatability with other softwares. I've heard stories of guys using slackware and not having to restart for more than a month. I figured what the heck. It's dirt cheap and what the worst that could happen? I'd have to reformat and get windows? If that were to be the case I'd probably end up running 98. Please let me know what you think.

A compatible 256MB Memory module for your laptop should say on the module 32MB x 64.

redsky42,

I hate to say this but I think you're SOL. The DOD scrubber you used wiped out the partition that should never have been wiped out. Hence the error message "Save to Disk file not found. Save to Disk feature is disabled" Carefully read the following article

You're welcome. The ideal use of DOD scrubber is to only wipe clean the HD before discarding it. It is not as effective as having the HD shredded to pieces.
