My friend has an old Compaq Presario desktop, when starting she keeps getting the error message "Non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" I have tried what little I know...thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

Make sure there is nothing in the floppy drive. I know it sounds silly, but I have done it also.

First, I Hate fixing old compaqs. Sorry had to get that out of the way. Does the comp boot? I assume not... The first thing I'd do is see if you can fdisk the hd. You can get that error when a partition goes south. If you can't fdisk it likely the disk is shot.
Hope this helps.
Jim

Thanks to those of you who replied. There are no disks in any of the drives. Jim I have to agree the old Compaqs should be used as a boat anchors...However, you mentioned something about fdisking the HD...what all is involved with that? Thanks again!

fdisk is a way of checking to see if the system detects your HD. By the way, does your system even sees the HD when you try to boot
