I am trying to install a new maxtor 80gb hard drive as a master. However on boot I get the message Error loading os system. I have updated the bios and still i get it. I have the same size HD as a slave and that boots ok. Please help.

You have to format and patition your new drive and install an operating system on it before you can use it as your boot drive. You can do it with your WinXP disk.

Obviously the HDD w/OS has to be the primary master, but it would be best to put the other HDD on the 2ndary channel

Or load the new hard drive BEFORE you add the other one as a slave. Obviously they both need to be jumpered correctly.

I tried to load Xp on, It copied the required files then rebooted. That's when I got error loading os system. What do you mean by secondary channel?

On your motherboard you have two places where your ribbon cable plugs in.One is labled Channel 1 (or Primary) and the other is channel 2.He's saying make sure the master drive is jumpered as Master and pluged into Channel#1. Make sure the other drive is jumpered as Slave and pluged into Channel#2.You can leave the Slave drive not pluged in for now.

What are you saying???? THe main hard drive goes as master on channel one, the additional hard drive goes as slave on channel one. Optical drives go on Channel two, jumoered as master and slave, if more than one of these.

Although just about any config will work provided the jumpers & cables are set correctly, optimal data transfers are obtained across channels, not between 2 devices on the same channel. When possible, the general recommendation is to not pair up 2 HDDs or 2 optical drives on the same channel.

Prim master = HDD w/OS
Prim slave = optical reader
2ndary master = optical writer
2ndary slave = 2nd HDD

Is this a new question or are you just hijacking this thread?

What happened before this? Were you monkeying around inside the case? Usually that message means your hard drive has a serious problem, or is dead, is disconnected, or the onboard IDE controller has failed.

How about some more information, in English please? (No "wotz dat". k)
