error loading operating system

my friend gave me his old comp, p2 and he kept the hard drive (i put a new one in). the comp had xp on it before but now when ever i turn it on after bios it says "error loading operating system" it wont boot a 98 start up floppy or win xp pro cd. any suggestions? thanks

Did you partition and format this new drive you put in? Is it brand new? or does it have some history?
What size is it? and does your BIOS recognize it?

i put a new hd in b.c he took the old one. i tired three hd, first was a brand new one, another one is the existing one in my desktop and another one i had around and all had the same problem. bios does see them but for some reason it wont boot anything. i guarantee one of the hd works, b/c i am using it right now.
