Comment:

Built-in audio card on my friend's MB behaves oddly.

When you listen to wmv and dvd video, the sound is garbled. When you listen to cd audio or sound on a Powerpoint document, everything is fine.

We installed a brand new PCI sound card and the result is identical.

We re-installed XP and results are identical with built-in sound card and PCI sound card.

We did download k-lite codec pack but there was no improvement at all. Maybe we didn't activate the codecs properly.

Could anybody let us know where we missed out?

It *could* be an issue with the audio sampling frequency of the different media. CD and most other audio run at 44.1khz or lower. DVD and other movie audio is usually sampled at 48khz. If there's a mismatch it should normally result in changing pitch and speed of the audio. Perhaps in your case it sounds 'garbled' because your config can't handle 48khz properly. Unfortunately I can't tell you where to look first to cure this. Maybe it's a DirectX problem (?)

Once again, just a shot in the dark.

Problem solved. I replaced the pci graphics card with an AGP one. It's a 1.7Ghz P4 Pc and probably that the graphics cycles were interfering with the sound cycles.
