Specs: Windows XP
I have a one year old Epson DX5000. I have always bought genuine Epson cartridges.
According to information on the Epson site I should get around 400 pages printed in black.
Not only I get about 20 or 30 maximum but though I chose the only black option, the colour cartridges level goes down at an appallingly fast level. After 4 or 5 pages, the new coulour cartridges are 2/3 down. I chatted on line with Epson (my warranty has run out), they tell me to send them the cartridges to check whether they are faulty. if they are not, the printer is faulty. reapiring it would probably cost me more than buying a new one. it is outrageous!!!

Well, I agree. Sometimes the printer might be doing a clean function either by you telling it or it just does it. That clean function uses a LOT of ink. Also the 400 page is something likke 8% coverage. If you print off anything with graphic that goes up to 30 -80 real fast.
Check also quality and select the lowest needed. Lastly sometimes you have to really look at all options. I have seen a few epsons that were confusing as to how to really print in Black only. Black and White can still be printing with color. The image could be in color but the print settings revert to color or aren't being selected as Black only.

Try to save stuff off on flash drives, reduce printing to the most critical needs.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Somehow you may have gotten hold of STARTER cartridges instead of full retail. Starter cartridges are what the printer usually ships with. Of course any of the conditions jefro mentioned could also be in play.
