Hello,
I have just purchased this brand new Emachines. It has AMD 64/ 2.0 ghz 3200+ which is equal to P4/ 3.2 Ghz processor, it has 2000 mhz FSB, 160 gb hard drive, 128 mb shared video card and 512 ram. With all this specifications it was supposed to be running lightening fast. But the problem is that it takes time to startup and open some programs. It may be ram because it is shared so it is 384 ram actually. Can that be the problem, or is something wrong with PC? I know this kind of fast system needs a lot of ram to function better, so will solve the problem if i upgrade the ram to 1 gb? Thank you again

Installing 1 gig of RAM will make a difference with running some applications. Click START / RUN and type MSCONFIG and then click the STARTUP tab. Uncheck unecessary items on startup to make it boot faster. Also, check your Motherboard specs to see if it supports Dual Channel Memory. If it does, purchase 2 identicle 512 megs chips instead of one 1 gig chip. Check it at www.crucial.com.

It makes them think you're up to something...

Hey man,
I dont see any unneeded files to stop from starting up. Yeah my motherboard supports dual channel memory.
So what do you think causes this slow startup, with a very fast processor, memory?

Don't worry too much about the load time. How does the computer perform once it is running? Download Sisoft SANDRA and run a few benchmarks. As far as what is loading at startup goes, if you don't need it running all the time, then don't have it set to load at startup. MS office, or works is a good example. You can open any of the programs in that suite anytime you need them. Get the idea.

Hey, PF uses up too much it is like 365 mb of 970. That is a lot of usage. I think this all is because of memory. Hey man also the startup time that OtheHill was talking about is not a big of a deal, the thing is that after is starts up then it takes a bit to open like Norton or something like that.
BadBoy i dont know what you mean. I bought already built PC so everything should be installed.
Any other help would be appreciated
Thank you Killer

Not: unneeded files to stop from starting up.

In other words, we aren't talking about FILES we are talking about APPLICATIONS.

If you have, for example, Norton Utilities or some other ant-virus program running at startup, you may be hogging system resources that could be freed up.

A great system tune up program is at:

http://www.pcpitstop.com

Run the hard drive tests and see if there are any recommendations to speed up performance.

A huge resource hog

I have this cpu and all it took was msconfig... Of course the cpu is slow.It uses literally all of its remaining 384 to start up...With this cpu processes "get in line" upon startup and unload for 5 minutes or so...With 184 pin 1Gb Dual channel kit This Cpu Kills! Make sure you get the lowest CAS latency though cause the motherboard processor combo creates latency in itself. Upgrade to two 1 Gb kits and with low CAS latency the CPU is a Powerhouse! Watch the beginning processes without adjustment finish in under a minute...You wont be dissappointed :) anyone agree?

I have this computer, what you need to do is yes upgrade to 1 Gb ram, and/or uninstall all of Norton, all of McAffee services, then download AVG anti-virus, it's free, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Install these they do as good or better in my opinion than Norton and uses a lot less of your computer's performance for it's needs. This helped me a lot. here's the link to AVG Free- http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
and to Microsoft Anti-Spyware -
