emachines T3092 monitor problem

Specs: Windows XP
The monitor died on with my T3092, but troubleshooting says it's not the monitor. Can't get the computer to stay on long enough to tell me trouble, but brother says I need to buy video card and pop it in the back slot. Really? If so, what do I get? Same as you rec for folks wanting to play video games? Huh? Help!

If the computer won't stay powered on long enough to diagnose it, it's not the video card. It's probably your power supply. Does it turn off after a short time?
