My mom's old computer just crapped out. I want to get her a replacement this week. She uses it for internet, email, and photos. I saw a cheap emachine (Pentium D 805, 512 MB memory with 160 gig hard drive and DVD burner for $299.00 (after rebates). This sounds perfect for her but was wondering if anybody had any opinions about eMachines, either from past experiences or word of mouth. Thanks in advance.

E-machines is a pretty good budget brand. If your mom is going to use it for surfing the web, word processing etc.. then it would be be perfect.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

The price is right.
I have a computer with that CPU but 1GB ram and it motors pretty good.
I wouldn't use it for gaming.

They've a bad rep for using substandard power supplies - if it does fail, replacement is relatively inexpensive & straightforward

Thanks for all the replies. I checked the specs and there was nothing listed about power supply. I figure I will be OK, she just uses the computer for emailing photos and gossip with the rest of the blue haired biddies in the neighborhood.

Rich,
I'm using one right now. Its my second e-machines. Only problem I've had with either of them was the first one (400MHz, purchased summer 1999) power supply finally gave up; got a good replacement PS from newegg and computer still going strong over in the Philippines.
Second (one I'm using now) has been more than two years use and I use it a lot. Its 2.7 G Celeron, 256 RAM, 40 G hard drive, and combo CD burn/DVD read drive and Epson inkjet printer. Whole works was $400 after taxes and rebates. I think they are even cheaper now.
I installed an old LS-120 drive and replaced the combo drive with a DVD burner in this one. Straight-forward installs.
My opinion on e-machines is that you get your moneys worth and then some. Good value

It is if it doesn't damage something else when it fails, which it DID do in ALL these cases:

If you were to go by those, I would NOT buy an Emachines computer.
But on the other hand - we don't hear about many of the cases where replacing the PS was all that was required.

... that is all it took to get my W2040 going
Crappy Bestec PSU - scorched pieces were rattling around inside of its housing - 10 minute fix
