I'm having exactly the same problem. I have an Emachine model ET1161. Was working great, came back into the room to find it humming quite loudly so turned it off, haven't been able to turn it back on (that was about 3 weeks ago). I unplugged it when it wouldn't turn back on, when I plugged it back in to try and turn it on again the fans came on, but the power button still does not work...no lights, no beeps, monitor just reads no signal. Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

If you have a motherboard with an NVIDIA chipset, then the video chip has most probably separated from the motherboard. When the video chip is heated and then cools the solder shrinks and the chip separates from the main board. Your computer is exhibiting the classic signs of this typical problem with the NVIDIA video chip. It's easy to fix but you'll have to take the motherboard out of the case. Do a search on youtube from another computer (library) for repairing the HP DV6000 laptop computer. The motherboard is slightly different but, you'll get the idea of what has to be done. Most video NVIDIA chips are exactly the same.

The most likely thing that causes an emachines desktop system to fail to boot is it's BESTEC power supply is malfunctioning or has failed completely.
BESTEC power supplies often damage something else when they do that - often they fry the mboard, so replacing the power supply doesn't necessarily result in the system working again.
