Comment:

I have been asked to build a budget PC for a friend who simply wants to use it for word processing/spredshetts etc, no power hungry applications.

Local supplier has a good price on Elite motherboards, specifically the Elite K7 SOM.

Does anyone have any comments on the reliability of Elite motherboards please? I have used PC Chips and ASRock boards before with no problems but never used an Elite board before.

I just picked up an ECS K7VTA3 with an AMD XP 2000 the other day for $60 at Fry's and it's running SWEEET. I can't even begin to describe how much faster this is than my old 1.3 with a Jetway Mobo. Maybe it's the DDR Ram or something LOL.

ECS aren't bad... they do what they're supposed to, and initial quality is decent. It takes ages for BIOS updates to come out, but since they're normally put in budget workstations and pre-made "put your label on it and resell it" systems, this isn't too big a problem.

BTW, I've built 3 with an ECS K7S5A with Dual Mem capability and they've all worked wonderfully. Gotta admit, for a cheap board they're not bad.

I'm on one right now, the original, revision 1 and its been running for 2 years 24/7. The pro differs from mine two areas. I have onboard modem, which I don't need, and USB 2, which is nice. $39 at newegg.

These are reasonable quality boards by PCChips. They main thing to do is check the ECS web site for BIOS updates and driver updates for the board and make these updates first. Normally the BIOS is back level if the board has been setting on the shelf for a long time. And the driver CD is often hopelessly outdated.

LOL don't you just love the way CDs become "hopelessly outdated" so fast anymore? Its ridiculous really if you think about it, practically everything you buy anymore new off the shelf you hate to use the included CDs and usually go right to the web for updates, at least thats how its been for me with everything pretty much from burners to printers.

I've also had experience with PCChips boards and not had any problems.
