I hope you removed the defective modem. Disconnect everything from the motherboard except the CPU, video card and RAM. That's all you need to boot up and get a display.

Eek! Caps! Yes, remove the modem. It could theoretically have knocked out your motherboard or power supply, too...remember to try that. Hopefully, it's just a fried modem.
