Comment:
I just bought this new cpu and am looking at the stock cooler than comes with it. The cooler face that contacts the chip has what looks like 3 pieces of black tape or something on it. I thought the contacting face of the heatsink needed to be flush for the thermal distribution? does anyone know what i'm talking about?

There are thermal pads that are sometimes used instead of thermal paste. That 'might' be what you are seeing.I don't use them myself, but from what I've heard they work ok.
Note that they cannot be reused, if the heatsink is removed either paste or a new pad must be installed.

yep, thats just thermal paste. I just bought a new E4500 too, I dont get why they separated it into 3 sections but I just accepted it and installed it the way it was, I'm sure Intel's engineers are smarter than me.

Thanks guys. It was actually quite obvious once I got it out of the box and touched it :)
