Bought a laptop off of ebay. It came with a Dynx USB Cardbus adaptor. I swapped out the hard drives with one I already have, (this is relevant because I didn't test to see if it worked on the supplied setup) and tried to put in the Cardbus card. Windows (98) won't detect it. I know some usb devices require external power sources, but it should still detect the card! The laptop is an old thinkpad 560. I think the ebay seller managed to get it to work.

It is indeed SE. I solved USB mass storage 98 issues literally years ago. Now I need to get USB ports working! I incidentally have three of theses laptops. I put the supplied hdd in another one (Which is the EXACT same model but with slightly less awesomeness and a smaller screen.) I don't know if this is any indication, but I couldn't get any usb to work in xp on it. I of course, didn't try a power adapter, seeing as I don't have one. But it may have recognized the adapter and just not what I tried to plug in. And then there's the fact that it's not the original HDD owner.

You are talking pcmcia add on cards??

16 or 32 bit card? Not all systems support 32 b it cards. Since you say 133mhz I doubt it was 32 bit. Can the card downlevel to 16 bit? (kind of doubt it)

Also there is sometimes a pci to pci bridge that needs to be enabled with a driver support to connect to the pcmcia controller.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Put the old hard drive back in and try it then.

I doubt it will work. 32 bit in a 16 bit slot.

I put the old hard drive in another laptop that was the exact same model (except for the screen)and it didn't work. I've pretty much resigned the thing as pointless... but if anyone has any good ideas I'd love to hear them. The fact that the pcmcia slot might have been 16 bit and the card 32 bit completely slipped my mind, even though I've dealt with it before. Most of my interneting and Ebaying is late at night, when my mental faculties aren't at their top notch. Heh, first time I've decided to forget something that I posted on this site.

In the system properties dialog, it says PCMCIA is 32-bit. ??
