hi, i have a dell 530. just a year old. my hitachi dvd rom drive died. i replaced with hp dvd1160i which died in two weeks. i went back and got an exchange and that dvd rom died in about two weeks. i tried restore, i updated the drivers, etc. my device manager detects the driver and says it is working properly but when i hit the eject button the drive just hums as if it wants to open but can not.
any advice? seems weird that the same driver died twice.

Maybe you have a problem with the power supply or power connector. Three drives in a row sounds suspect, check the power cable and or the data cable to the drive for damage. If you have another power cable, change the cable on the drive. If you only have 1 hdd and 1 DVD, there should be spares, they may be tied back.
