Have you tried both DVD+R and DVD-R discs? Open Nero, click on "extras" then click on "get system info". This will list all the types of discs that your DVD system will read and write to. The drive seems to write DVD-RWs just fine but doesn't seem to like DVD-Rs. The drive burnt discs fine using his old laptop but since he has replaced it the problem has started.
