Ok I have a really nice, rather new Memorex DVD-RW, but just recently it has stopped recognizing CD's. It Will recognize DVD's and burn DVD's just fine, but it wont read CD's (manufactured or home burned) nor will it recognize blank CD's. I just don't get why? Anyone?

Combination drives use 2 different Lasers. One for CD and one for DVD. Either your CD laser is dirty or dead.

As I understand it, they use two seperate lasers, one for CD and one for DVD. The CD laser may have gone south. You could look for a firmware update and try that.

Fortunately CD burners are dirt cheap if you need to buy one.

This is not the problem...I have just swapped DVD burners, brand spankin' new, and I have the same problem. suggestions I have tried with no effect:
1) Delete from control panels, reboot
2) Delete uer and lower filters
3) uninstal Nero
4) Run Nero cleanup
5) reinstal the version 6, not 7 Nero
6) Try another burner
7) uninstal (phisically) the DVD-RW and reinstall
8) flash burner
9) get new burner
10) get updated bios
11) reinstall Windows

Still same lingering problem, I will also like to add get compleatly new system and do a fresh install to the list as well, as I have done that as well.
