Comment:

I recently bought a Mad Dog multimedia Dominator 6-in-1 Dual DVD+-R/RW/CD+-R/Rw Drive. I installed the drive and the accompanying Nero OEM Suite (Nero 6). When I go to burn a CD or DVD, the process gets to 2 or 3% and then my computer freezes and I am forced to do a hard reboot of the system. I've looked for new firmware, my ASPI is at peak efficiency, both the NERO and Mad Dog sites were a waste of time. Can anyone help me with this?

try and delete your startup items in msconfig to see if that's the problem - "start, run, type msconfig, click on startup tab at top of box, click disable all, apply, close, reboot. then try again

oh, i missed you have win 98. go to startup tab in msconfig, uncheck everything except load power profile, system tray, scan registry, and task monitor. apply, ok, reboot

You may double check your DMA setting under
Control Panel-System-device manager-Cdrom-properties. if DMA is on it can sometimes cause problems I had similar issues with mine. I was finally able to write to a CD-R after making sure I had the updated device drivers, unchecking DMA and removing a stick of defective RAM.

Well I already had msconfig cleared of all but the basics because I thought that maybe it was a memory problem so that wasn't it. I've tried burning with the DMA checked and un-checked. Last night I downloaded a couple of freeware burners to see if maybe it was Nero Express 6 that was causing the problems but they did the same thing. I think at this point I'm going to take the drive back. But if anyone has any ideas before I do let me know.

Well, I took the drive back to Office Max and bought a LITEON Dual DVD/CD-R/RW drive. This one has worked wonders. Basically my problem is solved. I think that the MAD DOG drive was just defective since this one is essentially the same thing (but a little faster) so I'm good from here on out. Thanks for the help Sleonard and czt.
