my dvd-rom drive won't read burned dvds - too old of a laptop I guess. is there a download of some sort to fix this or is there a compatable dvd+rw drive that would fit thiswould a bare drive inserted into my caddy work?

You could use an exernal USB 2.0 DVD RW with a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card.

I do this on a desktop with a PCI USB 2.0 card and it works quite well.
