A couple months ago I tried to burn a free program for my mom since all she has is dial up and the disc cracked inside the cdrom.

I got the disc out by using the pin hole.

Now however that is the only way I can get the door to open. After doing that a few times the eject button will work a few times then quit again. The light comes on and I can hear it trying to open but it won't or can't.

Is there a band or something that may have slipped? Or do I need a new DVDRW?

Well it could be that the gear has slipped off the other gear which makes the door open. Now if this is the case, you would have to open the cd drive. The good news is that if it is broken then buying a new one isn't that bad since they are only $30.
